Treats for Teacher
Holiday Gifts for Your Child's Educators
By Beth Hering
Edible ItemsMany teachers appreciate receiving homemade treats. "When I bring my gifts home each year, the first thing my family always asks is if I received anything they could help eat," says Frank Hering, 32, a high school teacher in Arlington, Va.
If you like the idea of giving an edible gift but don't have the time or skills to whip up something in the kitchen, know that store-bought goodies rank high, too.
With all the food around at the holidays, some teachers even prefer getting something that can be saved to enjoy at another time of year. Consider a Tupperware bowl filled with microwave popcorn sleeves, a mug overflowing with single-serve cocoa packets or a candy dish loaded with Hershey's kisses.
As the old saying goes, it's the thought that counts. Teachers realize that many families are strapped for cash, especially during the holidays.
Consider letting your child make their own gift. "I still have a poem and a picture one little girl made for me about 40 years ago," says Meg Maselli, a retired elementary-school social worker from Park Forest, Ill.
Another option is to let the child buy the present using his own money. "I was touched when one young lady, who I know did not have much money, saved her baby-sitting earnings to buy me a wallet," says Sam Maselli, a retired junior high school teacher in Chicago Heights, Ill. " carried that thing until it fell apart."
