MySpace, Your Space Whose Space Is It, Anyway?

Experts Teach Parents How to Take Back Control

Pages:  1  2  3

Do you know what and who is invading your kids' minds? Do you know what your kids are doing online these days?

Parenting experts Brent and Phelecia Hatch, authors of Raising a G-Rated Family in an X-Rated World (Greentree, 2006), are taking a stand against MySpace, iPod and video games, telling parents it's high time they take back their rightful space in their children's life. "When kids say 'You don't trust me!' parents need to say, 'You're right, I don't trust you!" the Hatches say. "Yes, that's true. Now show me what you are putting up there!'"

Parents need to find out what their kids are doing and open this up for sunshine. "It's time we take back control," the Hatches say. "Get into your kids' space. MySpace needs to be Our Space."

Speaking out about violent videogames – including the wildly popular Grand Theft Auto, which the Hatches say rewards players for causing animated mayhem – and calling Myspace.com a place for pedophiles to congregate, Brent Hatch says, "This is the kind of stuff that is out there. This is what we're up against."

"We're in a war, if you want to say it, with our kids, and we need to be there with them," Brent Hatch says. "Would you allow your children or grandchildren to lay on the floor and play with a knife? No, but we'll allow a child to have an Internet connection in his room."
