How Can Parents Help

Talk, talk, talk. Communication is one of the most effective ways to help keep your child safe on the Internet. The NCMEC study indicated that families who talk with their children about Internet safety reduce their child's exposure to potential threats and encourage safer, more responsible online decisions. Talk openly with your children about the dangers of the Internet and educate them about how to avoid these dangers. Make sure they understand they should never give out personal information including their name, city, address, school, phone or any information that would make it possible for others to find them offline. Reiterate the importance of never sharing their password. Help them to chose a username that does not reflect their real identity in any way and a password that is easy to remember but not obvious to others. As an added precaution your children may want to change passwords periodically. Remind them to come to you or another trusted adult if problems arise online.
