Developing a Relationship With Your Stepchildren

Help for New Stepmoms

What Should My Stepchildren Call Me?
Your stepchildren may not feel comfortable calling you "Mom," and truthfully, most biological moms wouldn't be happy with it either. There are many suitable variations to the word mom.

Let your stepchildren's creative juices flow. Perhaps they could learn how to say mother in a foreign language or use "Mum" like our British friends. "Mimi" is the favorite variation of Jann Blackstone-Ford, author of My Parents Are Divorced, Too (Magination, 1998).

Try working with your stepchildren, offering suggestions and listening to their ideas, until you come up with a version you can all accept and which will inevitably hold a special meaning for you.
