Girls, Girls, Girls
June 15, 2006
We've had phone calls from girls already. They giggle. They leave messages. They
invite him over. He has gone so far as to tell me that so-and-so is "hot." Ick!
How do mothers survive this?
For the most part, he's pretty nonchalant. He smiles. He tells them they are wierd. He says he won't go over. He talks to me about it. I like that part. I like that we communicate and share these private moments, but I know it's not forever. I know that eventually one of these girls will sweep in and steal his heart away for good. Sure, I don't have to be so dramatic about it, and I hope I won't be once he's 25, but right now, he's still my little boy.
There are a few girls that I really like. They, of course, don't call. They look me in the eye when I say hello. They talk with me. I imagine they will make wonderful daughters-in-law one day. The other ones ... well, I'm not so sure. Thank God we have at least 15 more years before we cross that bridge!
The good news is that I seem more obsessed than he does. He is way more into ESPN and baseball statistics than he is into the girls in fourth grade. He has no idea how I worry about his future, how I hope he will find happiness, security and love, and how I pray it is with somebody I can love as well.
