Summer Chatter

July 10, 2007

I feel like all I ever write about is baseball, but man, it's hard to find time for anything else. My son is playing on his first ever travel team, and it's crazy. Don't get me wrong...I love it! I can see why some parents steer clear of it, though. I like watching my son grow as an athlete, a team mate, a friend and a student. Sports really does provide all of those life lessons. It's important for him to be a part of something. It's important for him to feel productive and crucial to an end outcome. This accomplishes all of that in one nice little package -- time consuming as it is.

Anyhow, what else. Let's see... vacation? Maybe. We have talked about going to North Carolina for a week late in the summer. It's just hard to get away -- baseball. :) My son loved the beach when we went in the spring, so I want to get him back there. Once again, I really enjoyed watching him learn and grow. This time it was skim boarding and general beach play and ocean awareness, but it was neat to see how timid he arrived and how sure he left.

He's not the little boy at ALL anymore. Sometimes when I look at him, I see more man than boy, and that's exciting and scary. I love him fiercely, but I am learning to show that love in ways that are appropriate for an almost teenager. Hard as it is... No more kisses in public. Even hugs seem a bit stilted. Still, every night when I shut off his light -- well past 10 now! -- and tell him I love him and will see him in the morning, he peers over the rail of his top bunk bed and plants a kiss on my lips. In the darkness, I find it hard to separate those kisses from similar ones that he gave so willingly as a toddler. Time keeps moving on...
