Ramblings
August 4, 2006
Summer is just flying by. Before long, snow will be what's flying, which isn't
sounding so bad in all of this heat we've had lately.
OK, so enough about the weather. In less than a month, my kids go back to school. My oldest doesn't seem to be in a big hurry to return to school, but I think that's a reasonable expectation for most preteens.
The good news is that he shouldn't be dreading this year at all – it has all the makings of the perfect year. First off, he has a great teacher. Second, he's in a class with two of his very best friends, and he knows the other kids well. Third and finally, football starts when school starts, and he is really pumped for this season.
There is one other reason that I am looking forward to this year. You see, my
son is being testing for accelerated math. For years I have known that my son
just gets math, science too. (His dad's a doctor, and I can't even balance a checkbook,
so guess where the love of math and science comes from.
) Anyhow, I have also watched him become increasingly detached from his school-based
math and science. On occassion he would say, "I know all of that already. I'm
bored." But lately, he's taken to simply saying, "I don't like math." That makes
me sad.
If he tests as high on this school administrated test as he did on the national assessment test he previously took, then he will take math class with the next grade up. At first, I was worried. I couldn't imagine that he would want to take a class with older kids, but I'm OK with it now, because he's OK with it.
Other than all of that, the back to school focus is switching to shopping. It's so easy to shop for my boys, especially my oldest. He just wants anything at Dick's Sporting Goods – one stop shopping!
I'll post again soon – promise!
Shel
PS...I know some of you have been asking to see the rest of my children, so here's the picture you've been waiting for (and yes, that is a Christmas tree, and yes, that is the most recent picture I have of all three of them — pitiful, I know):
