Turkey Bowl
Introduction
I had no idea how many people play football on Thanksgiving! I'm not talking about professional football. No, I'm talking about families that hit the local school yards and play until they are bone tired and ready for three helpings of turkey.
My son and his "crew," staged their first annual Turkey Bowl on Thanksgiving Day 2007. My daughter and I tagged along. She shivered in the dropping temperature and spitting rain. I dubbed myself the official photographer. Man did those guys have fun! Dads played too. I laughed so hard at some points, but mostly I just felt thankful. Being Thanksgiving Day and all, I suppose thankfulness wasn't a tall order, but watching my sons (yes, a little brother played too) and husband out there have a wonderful time with such a great bunch of friends really drove the point home.
It's easy to remember family on the holidays. This year. I am most thankful for friends and the slack that they pick up in my life -- babysitting, borrowing things, ears to bend, shoulders to cry on, laughter to share, kids who keep mine busy, husbands who help mine stay sane, smiles that remind me I'm not alone. How did I ever raise this child -- these children -- before I knew you all so well? From where I sit now, it was mighty lonely.
Hilary Clinton said, "It takes a village..." It's not the most popular sentiment with some circles, but I am totally feeling it right now. I couldn't be happier with my son's chosen group of friends. I am even more grateful that his friends have parents whom my husband and I absolutely adore.
Here's looking forward to next year's Turkey Bowl!
