Expert Q&A

By Chris Crutcher
Author, Licensed Child and Family Therapist

We recently moved into a new neighborhood, and my 8-year-old son has made friends with the 13-year-old boy next door. They share a common interest in sports, but I am reluctant to encourage the friendship because of the age difference. What should I do?

I'd keep an eye on it; make sure you know what's going on between them. It may be an innocent thing that will play its course because of the age difference. But like I said, it's something you want to watch. It's not always a good idea to intervene just because something doesn't "look" right, but it's never a bad idea to be vigilant."
