Expert Q&A

By Michael F. Wasserman
General Pediatrician

Is it normal for a preteenager to have hair under her arms and on her legs. It's enough to shave, but I am worried that she shouldn't start so soon. Shouldn't she wait until she's a teen? If she starts, won't the hair grow back thicker?

The development of hair under the armpits is part of the development process from childhood through adolescence. If this occurs too early – before 8 years in a girl or 9 years in a boy – this could indicate a hormonal problem and should be discussed with your pediatrician.

No, the hair won't grow back thicker if shaving is initiated at an earlier age.
