Expert Q&A

By Eve Eliot
Eating Disorder Expert

What, in your opinion, are the most common reasons that children start developing an eating disorder?

I think our media-driven culture is the main factor responsible for disordered eating. Imagine a world in which we did not see so many images of others, a world before the advent of photography, newspapers, magazines and TV. We would be living in communities in which other people formed our information, and usually, those other people would share our lifestyle and eating habits because we would have access to the same foods and lifestyle, and therefore, have similar values."
