Expert Q&A

By Michael F. Wasserman
General Pediatrician

How do I know the difference between an outgoing, spirited child and one with ADD? My 5-year-old is very gregarious, and a friend recently suggested that I have him checked for ADD. He does seem more energetic than many kids his age but isn't that just personality? Are there specific indicators for ADD?

Looking for specific indicators for ADHD is a difficult task. There is no simple blood test or other method, which definitely confirms or denies the diagnosis. However, as a starting point, a parent should consider how well or poorly the child is doing in the school setting, especially in comparison with other children of the same age. Additionally, looking for problems with learning and social interaction is another potential red flag. Finally, assessing your child's state of happiness with the school environment is part of the process. If your child is doing well in these aspects, it is not likely that he or she is having significant problems with ADHD.
