Expert Q&A

By Kelli Calabrese
Exercise Physiologist

My son just started lifting weights. How do I know if he's lifting too much?

Younger kids should stay away from heavier weights. Choose a resistance where they can perform 10 to 15 repetitions. As kids get older and stronger, they can gradually increase the amount of resistance they use. If your child cannot perform an exercise for eight repetitions, it's likely too challenging for their abilities. Try modifying the exercise or trying a new one. For example, if your child can't perform a traditional push-up, he may have success doing one with her knees on the floor.
