Expert Q&A

By David L. Fay, M.D.
Family Physician
Associate Director, Waukesha Family Practice Residency Program

My son, who is 12 years old, is experiencing pain in his nipples. They are firm and sore. Is this all to do with puberty?

Yes; most likely this is due to some mild gynecomastia, a condition of breast development which occurs in males. This is very common during puberty. Fortunately, it doesn't last long and doesn't mean a male will develop breasts like a female. Mild discomfort can be treated with analgesics (acetaminophen, ibuprofen)."
