Question: I have two daughters; one is almost 6, and the other is 12. I cannot get my 6-year-old to stay out of her 12-year-old sister's bedroom. Nothing seems to work. Any ideas? |

Answer: A lot depends on why she's going in there. If she's doing it when her older sister is there, it's probably a compliment to your 12-year-old, one she doesn't welcome. It makes most 6-year-olds feel important and visible and all those good things to hang out with an older sibling. I'd highlight the fact that no one can go into the 6-year-old's room without permission either and encourage (but not require) the 12-year-old to find some times when she invites her sister in. If you see the 6-year-old go in there, go in and lead her out. Don't get mad, but be persistent. If there's a way to let the 12-year-old lock the door without ever locking herself in, that may help, but I'd use it as a last resort. Depending on how they get along, the 12-year-old probably could get her to stop by engaging her once in a while. |
